CAT 2017 Exam - Common Admission Test

Common Admission Test (CAT) is an online entrance examinations for the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), the most prestigious colleges to pursue post graduation courses in management.IIM-Ahmedabad will conduct CAT 2017 in the months of October/November 2017. IIM Indore was holding Common Admission Test from last two years. CAT Entrance Exam is a pre-requisite for admission to various management programmes of IIMs, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bharathidasan Institute of Management-Tiruchirappalli (BIM-Trichy), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) and few other institutions.

About CAT 2017 Entrance Exam

Eligibility

The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA (45% in case of the candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Persons with Disability (PWD)/Differently Able (DA)category) awarded by any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University

Candidates appearing for the final year of bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification examination and those who have completed degree requirements and are awaiting results can also apply.If selected, such candidates will be allowed to join the programme provisionally, only if she/he submits a certificate latest by June 30, 2017 from the Principal/Registrar of her/his College/Institute (issued on or before June 30, 2017) stating that the candidate has completed all the requirements for obtaining the bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification on the date of the issue of the certificate.

CAT Exam Pattern

CAT Exam Duration is for a total time of 2 hours and 50 minutes (170 minutes). PWD/DA candidates with scribe requirements will be allowed an extra hour. All candidates will start the test at the same time. The medium of the test is in English language for all candidates.The test has 100 multiple choice questions across two sections.

  • Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation – 50 Question
  • Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning – 50 Question

Three(3) points will be awarded for each correct answer; one (1) point will be deducted for each wrong answer. There is no penalty for questions that are left unanswered.

CAT Admission Process

IIM shortlists candidates for the second stage of selection which may be independent of each other. The process may include Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussions (GD) and Personal Interviews (PI).Performance in CAT 2014 examination is an important component in the admission process. IIMs may use previous academic performance of the candidates, relevant work experience, and other similar inputs in short listing and rankings of candidates at various stages of the admission process. The processes, academic cut-offs and the weights allocated to the evaluation parameters may vary across IIMs.

Shortlisting – List of shortlisted candidates for the next level of selection will be made available on the individual IIM websites. Each IIM will send interview letters to the shortlisted candidates directly. The criteria for short-listing vary from IIM to IIM. In order to ensure fairness and equity in comparison of performances of the candidates across different test sessions, the scores of the candidates shall be subjected to a process of Normalization. The Normalization process to be implemented shall adjust for location and scale differences of score distributions across different forms and the scaled scores obtained by this process shall be converted into percentiles for purposes of shortlisting.
